Tutorials: Wooden Monogram Banner | DIY Chicks | Raleigh Wedding Photographer

    Wednesday, August 28, 2013

For several days prior to their wedding, I had been having debates in my head about my clients wedding photos. I wanted to give them something that would bring an added flair for their wedding photos; something...custom. I thought about what that special thing would be for several days, until I had the "Ah-HA" moment. I would make them a monogrammed banner in their wedding colors! Something that could be incorporated into their photos AND be a cute display item for their home. Not one to waste time, I guesstimated what I would need in order to complete the project and quickly drove 10 minutes away to my local Michaels, the haven for crafters. I wound up getting:

    2 medium wooden initials
    1 large wooden initial
    1 spool of ribbon - 8 yards
    1 pack of eyelet screws
1 small bottle of acrylic paint
    1 sponge brush

The first thing that I did was figure out the placement of my eyelet screws. Initially I placed one screw on the top center of each medium initial.

I later found that the initials hung better if two screws were added to the farthest ends of the top of each letter, so I adjusted my screw placement. The large initial received one screw at the top of each point on the 'M'. The wood was pretty soft so I was able to screw the eyelets in by hand, using a little pressure.

Once my eyelet screw holes were in place, I removed the screws and proceeded to paint the letters. The reason why I placed my holes, and then painted, is because I didn't want to mar the paint job by trying to put the screws in after the fact. (Sounds like this makes sense, right?) I removed the screws before painting because (OCD?), I didn't want the screws to get paint on them. But all of my theory went out of the window when I had to go back and change the placement of the screws. My paint job was not damaged at all by the new screw placement.

The letters were dry after about two coats. At that point I added my eyelet screws and begin threading the ribbon. To make sure that I didn't have any crazy looking gaps in my banner, I threaded and knotted the ribbon to each screw as I went along. I measured the distance of each letter by eye, but fee free to mark points along your ribbon for spacing sake.

The result was a pretty nice looking decorative banner that my bride absolutely adored.

    Total Cost - $16.80
Total Time - About 4 hours
    Level of Difficulty - Easy
    Brides Joy - Priceless!

Invest In Your Photographer | Raleigh Wedding Photographer

    Wednesday, August 21, 2013

So, you're planning your wedding! Congratulations!! Maybe you've been envisioning your wedding day, right down to the smallest detail, from childhood. Maybe, you haven't given your wedding day much thought at all and will just roll with the punches now that it's official. Either way, as a bride or groom planning your wedding, one thing that you should be, is prepared with the facts.

Many brides and grooms do not understand the importance of a great photographer. Someone who fits your style, that you get along with and who will listen to your needs so that they can make sure that their executed vision is in alignment with yours. Instead, they may go with the most cost effective option, and while that can sometimes work, oftentimes it does not. Memories get missed, shots of certain family members get overlooked or details are not appreciated. Maybe the edited photos that you receive are not up to par, or...the pictures are just terrible. *insert sad face here*

New York Magazine surveyed 100 brides on what they would have done differently when it came to their wedding preparations. Here's what they had to say:

There you have it. 21% of brides say that they would have budgeted more funds for wedding day photography. That's higher than any other single category, with the exception of "Everything Else". Don't set yourself up for disappointment. Make sure that you invest in your photographer, because at the end of the day, when everyone has gone and the dress is off, all you'll have left of your special day, the day that you worked so hard to create, are your memories and your photos.

Sneak Peek: S+E Forever | Destination Wedding Photographer

    Tuesday, August 20, 2013

It's official. Chronicles Photography is now a destination wedding photographer. I got back last night from photographing S+E's destination wedding in Paradise Island, Bahamas, and a paradise it was. I have only witnessed a few weddings that had such an easy flow, and this was one of them; even with over 100 guests in attendance! The love for these two was so tangible that even hotel guests and staff wanted to bless the couple. Everything was perfect for my bride and groom. I can't wait to share some of the details from the day and talk about the special gift that I made for them. Stay tuned!

Look into the Light Carol Anne

    Friday, August 16, 2013

One evening I sat down to do some editing and marveled at all of the pictures that I have taken over the course of this year. I was pretty stoked, but then...I realized something. I take fun and interesting pictures for other people, but I don't have any fun and interesting pictures of myself. I'm always behind the lens, framing my subject, composing and investing my creativity in each shot. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE what I do...but I would also like to look back 20 years from now and see ME in a creative way. SO...I decided to do a selfie shoot!

I've been wanting to play around with different lighting setups for a little bit now, so I decided to make my selfie shoot a lesson in lighting. I loaded up my tripod, camera, flash, remote trigger and light stand, and headed out to the front yard to set up, sparking off the flash here and there. I'm sure that at least one neighbor looked out the window, questioning my sanity. One actually came outside for a bit. I can only imagine what the scene looked like to an outsider. But it doesn't take much for me to have some kind of fun, so fun times were most certainly had. It might be an only child thing? *shrugs* Plus the shoot was an awesome learning experience.

But the real learning didn't occur until I made a mistake. I moved the light stand to set up one of my shots and it wound up in the frame of the picture. (gasp) When I reviewed the picture and saw that my flash looked like an orb of light, I was like, wait a minute...that actually looks pretty cool. Why not incorporate in into my picture somehow? So I played around with it and love the effect that was produced. Now every time I see this picture, I find myself reminiscing on Poltergeist and Tangina, weird voice and all, telling Carol Anne to look into the light.

The details. I certainly find myself somewhat obsessed with them. Details are accessories, compliments that provide an outsider with a final picture of the total package. They also make the planner feel extra good about themselves.

Count On Me Through Thick and Thin... | Raleigh Portrait Photographer

Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art...It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things that give value to survival ~ C.S. Lewis

Meet Angel! I had the awesome privilege of photographing her along with her friends this past week. Angel just recently celebrated a milestone birthday. Woot Woot! She was looking to do something to not only commemorate her life, but also the friendships that she had formed throughout her life. Hearing her vision for the friendship/girlfriends shoot, I was honored that she called on me to capture those bonds.

Fun times were had by all! While I photographed the ladies...and a gent...we laughed, posed off and even sang. At one point during the shoot, we're walking down the street and the ladies bust out singing the theme song to the hit show Girlfriends...you know, with Joan, Maya, Lynn and Toni...anywho, these ladies did it and it made for some awesome memories for the photo album. Our gent was cool as cake and seemed used to the rambunctious outburst from the ladies.

But what really touched me were the stories and the length of time behind each relationship. Angel shared with me how long she had been friends with each person. The responses varied from around 6 to 20 years! While she shared their stories, I photographed them. In those moments you could see the unbreakable bond between them as they recalled how they met and joys that they've shared. I'm thrilled that I was not only able to be a part of this experience, but to capture it for Angel.

City of Lights | Personal Musings

    Thursday, August 1, 2013

NYC! The city that never sleeps and the place that I'm proud to call home. I grew up in a small neighborhood in the Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn. Outside of living in Raleigh for the past few years, I've never lived anywhere else. I hadn't been home in a while SOOOO, after some thought I decided to go home for a few weeks. It would give me a chance to spend some time with my mom and grandma, meet the children from South Africa that my mom is hosting this summer AND see my best friend who recently moved to Seattle to be with her hubby. Not to mention that my sister-in-law could visit there with me and experience NYC like a New Yorker.

Needless to say that my 11 day "vacation" was jam packed. We walked to our destinations the majority of the time (in 90+ degree temps) in true New York fashion, took the train to various places in The City and did theeee most every single day. But through it all I made sure to take some time for my photographic expression.

I finally made it down to Lower Manhattan to see the Freedom Tower. You can see this building from virtually any point in NY, Brooklyn and Queens. It's crazy. It's even more impressive to see it up close.

I also had the opportunity to  do an urban shoot with my Sis!

But the highlights of the trip were spending time with my sister-in-law and mom as well as my South African brothers Clive, Happy and Maxwell! At the end of the day Family is where you can find the greatest joys of life. I love them all!
