Tips for Maximizing Time on Your Wedding Day | North Carolina Wedding Photographer

    Wednesday, August 27, 2014

You're planning your wedding and you've probably invested quite a bit of time and money for your special day. Of course when you envision the day you envision perfection, joy and becoming one with the love of your life. Unfortunately you may sometimes encounter stressful situations that could have been avoided with a little extra knowledge. Here are some tips that I think will help tremendously.

    1. Hair and make-up. These are the two of the main elements of your bridal prep. Most brides need them since they are important in the completion of your overall look. Hair and make-up can also be the reason why you are late to your ceremony. You can combat this by scheduling a hair and make-up consult before your wedding day. Here's why I love a pre-wedding consult; Your pre-wedding hair and make-up consult gives you the opportunity to discuss your look in detail with the artist and preview your look before the wedding. You can tweak things here and there with all of the time in the world to do so. It also gives the artist a chance to learn your facial structure, skin undertones and hair type BEFORE the wedding, helping the artist choose the right products for you. Consider this time as the dress rehearsal. Another thing that I really like about having a hair and make-up trial is that you get to know the people who will be servicing you on your wedding day. Being familiar with your wedding day team takes some of the stress off of you because it leaves you with less to wonder about and more time to enjoy the process.

    2. Designate a go-to person. It is often instinctual for your guests or wedding vendors to reach out to you with questions on the day of your wedding. This can place unnecessary stress on you and take away from your ability to be in the moment on your wedding day. To combat this, designate a person (or two) to be the go-to for the day. This person can be responsible for making sure that vendors get paid, helping guests out with simple questions and making sure that you are stress-free. In my consults with my couples, I am sure to ask them to provide a point person that is familiar with the family and can assist me with gathering the family for portraits. This brings me to my next point.

    3. Schedule a consult with your photographer. The purpose of the consult is to go over, or even create, a proposed timeline. This step is really important since it will help to put the days events into perspective. During the consult we will schedule the day (almost to the minute) from the very beginning until the end. This helps in maximizing time because we can anticipate things like the length of the receiving line and how long that will take. This gives us an idea of the amount of time that we have for photos between this time and the reception. Now don't get me wrong, the timeline may more than likely change a bit on the day of. It happens. BUT, at least we have a flow of the day and can anticipate where we need to switch up to accommodate the changes that have occurred.

Hopefully these tips will help you in planning your day. If you have any ideas that I haven't covered here, please feel free to share in the comments section!

The Details DO Matter...So Capture Them | North Carolina Wedding Photographer

    Wednesday, August 6, 2014

Wedding planning. There is so much effort and detail that can go into the planning of a wedding. You pick up one magazine and next thing you know you're on an endless spiral through wedding magazines, blogs and Pinterest trying to come up with the perfect theme. Picking the perfect wedding colors, flowers, favors, etc., can take up a lot of time.

I can remember the planning of my own wedding. I chose to take the DIY route. Part of that was because I love to create and work with my hands. But a big part of it was that I was moving from Brooklyn to Raleigh and needed money for that. SO, I did all of my invites, favors and centerpieces myself. Everything from the wedding colors, to the bridesmaids dresses to the perfume and accessories that I wore was carefully thought out and revolved around the winter theme of our wedding. And on that cold day in January, everything fell together perfectly! But...it was such a busy day that I really couldn't appreciate the end result. This is where your photographer comes in.

You have taken the time to incorporate these special details into your day but chances are, in the swirl and hustle of it all, you may not be able to fully appreciate the effort put into it. Your photographer, however, understands all of the work put in and should capture these details for you to appreciate at a later date.

I was a second shooter at Maple Chase Golf & Country Club in Winston Salem, NC this past weekend. When I walked in I immediately took notice of all of the cute details that the bride and groom had brought in. Their colors were taupe, creme and red, which made for a classic look with really cute pops of color.

The groom and groomsmen sported tuxedo shirts with rolled up sleeves for a casual touch. The guys each wore a calla lily and red rose boutonniere, which was attached to their red suspenders. Red was also incorporated into their bow-ties.

The bridesmaids all wore different styles of lace knee-length dresses in the shade of creme. They each held a simple, yet elegant bouquet made up of three calla lilies wrapped in red burlap. Pops of red was also incorporated into their shoes, nail polish and lip color.

The groomsmen also received a classic leather and silver flask as gifts. Nice touch!

The official flowers were the calla lily and the red rose. (LOVE calla lilies!)

I made sure to document these things for the bride and groom because memories fade over time. You've spent time, money and effort on all of the things that make your wedding day unique. Make sure that you are able to look back on your entire day and be happy that those small details were made available to you in a tangible way. You'll be happy that you did!

Bethany+Denny: A Rustic Chic Wedding | North Carolina Wedding Photographer

    Monday, June 9, 2014

I met Bethany for the first time at our initial client consult a month or so before her wedding. I drove up to the location of the wedding, which was at her family's farm in Haw River, NC. We lazily strolled along the farm as she told me her vision for the day. Her energetic and super fluffy white dog Bella, ran around us as Bethany walked me through a small portion of the 80 plus acre farm. As she showed me where the different elements would be located, I grew increasingly excited for her and Denny's big day.

Fast forward to Saturday, May 31st. The weather was absolutely perfect! It can get incredibly hot here in NC, but on that Saturday there wasn't even the slightest hint of humidity. The breeze was SO delicious, and fluffy cotton balls dotted the sky. I drove up to the farm and the guys were relaxing, hanging out and grilling the meat for the day ahead. They were so chill! When I got to the girls, however, there was a different kind of energy.

The house was abuzz with activity. Bridesmaids were getting hair and make-up done, the flower girl and junior bridesmaids were playing with the dog and the bride was in her element. The energy was great! It was wonderful to see all the girls together and the strong bonds that they had built over the years. It was also a blessing to witness Bethany's vision coming together. The best way for me to describe it is rustic chic. Wildflower bouquets, cowboy boots, horses, quilt covered hay bales, corn hole and skeet shooting were pulled together in a beautiful display that reflected both Bethany and Denny's personalities.

There were so many meaningful details that were added to the day. One sweet touch was Bethany adding her grandmother's nursing pin to her bouquet of flowers. Bethany wanted to make sure that her grandmother was there with her in spirit.

One thing about Bethany and Denny is that they are both diehard lovers of horses, and own a few themselves. That's actually the story of how they met. Denny and Bethany were both at Circle K Ranch in Graham, NC when Denny saw her walking by. He shared that he had to know who she was, so he sparked conversation with her. He has been hooked ever since. Sweet! So on their wedding day, Denny rode in on Ruger and Bethany rode side-saddle on Lilly, which was her "engagement ring" from Denny.

It was also a lot of fun just watching them in their element, surrounded my friends, family, loved ones and shotguns! Bethany didn't play any games in that wedding dress. She and Denny both joined in on the skeet shooting fun. She even got me to shoot for a bit. I felt like a boss! AND she grabbed a few pictures of me shooting. I LOVE my brides!

Bethany and Denny are the sweetest couple that you could ever meet. Because of the nature of my work (if I can even call it that) I was able to watch the love that they have for one another through my lens. It's a pretty powerful thing. I'm honored that they chose me to capture it for them. Bethany and Denny, I wish you two nothing but blessings and happiness for a lifetime.

S + E = Wedding at Riu Palace Paradise Island | Destination Wedding Photographer

    Monday, September 2, 2013

I had the pleasure of being the photographer for the wedding of a very special couple who are very dear to me. Their wedding was held on the beach of the gorgeous Riu Palace at Paradise Island. Surrounded by family, friends and even some of the hotel guests, these two exchanged vows before God while standing on white sands, in front of the most beautiful aqua waters. I must say that all of the guests, as well as myself, were blown away by the setting as well as the display of love and devotion displayed. Congratulations to you both! May your years be fruitful and blessed!
