In a New York Minute | Random Musings

    Friday, August 29, 2014

I am a native New Yorker and I have to confess...When I lived there I did not fully appreciate everything that my town had to offer. I mean, I visited most of the major monuments on field trips when I was in grade school, but I never really took it upon myself to explore like I would if I were from another state. So now, every time I go home, I'm in full tourist mode. It's kind of non-stop. Visiting family and friends, doing scheduled shoots, hopping on and off of public transportation, walking blocks and blocks to my destination and acting like a pure tourist can be pretty exhausting. But I figure I'll sleep when I get back to my home here in Raleigh. This summer I visited NYC twice in the span of three weeks; both times for work. But in between working I told myself that I absolutely needed to do two things that I had been meaning to do for a long time; visit the 9/11 Memorial Museum and go to The Top of the Rock...and I did!

I went to the 9/11 Memorial Museum knowing that it would be difficult, but it was something that I felt needed to be done. I used to work in the immediate area of The World Trade Center and was down there on the day of the events. I worked in a law firm at 115 Broadway and my co-workers and I stood on Broadway watching everything unfold after we had pretty much been barricaded in the city. We watched the second plane enter the buildings as well as both towers collapse onto themselves. The Manhattan location of the firm closed shortly thereafter and I haven't really been back in the area since. I knew that the visit would be emotional, but I had no idea how much.

I began to weep shortly after I got off of the train. Smh.

The museum was partly built with remnants of the towers. I love how they incorporated the steel tridents into the facade.

I had to run into the bathroom to get tissue because of the tears. I thought it was strange that there wasn't any tissue in strategic locations around the museum but then I soon realized that I was one of few who was a weeping mess. I took this selfie to cheer myself up and get it together. An entire sappy mess! Lol.

This is the original retaining wall (aka slurry wall) that was built to keep the Hudson River from flooding the buildings. I love that they left it exposed for the museum.

This beam was the only thing left standing after it was all said and done. It was also the last thing to be removed from ground zero.

I'm happy that I got an opportunity to visit the museum and memorial. I'm even happier that I ran into a good friend afterwards who could lift my spirits. The museum is nice, but it's also a really heavy place, filled with memories of that day and the weeks that followed. Anything that you can think of regarding that day is there. Voice recordings, newspaper clippings and even some of the papers that poured out from the gaping holes in the buildings and into the sky. The memorial itself is beautifully done and pretty breathtaking when you come up on them.

The Freedom Tower. It's not complete yet but the architecture and materials that have gone into the construction of this building is absolutely amazing! I look forward to its completion.

Then I ventured uptown to go to The Top of the Rock. Of course I was able to come across some kind of sub-level entertainment. She was really good!

I met up with my mom at her job and we strolled the city for a bit, venturing into Lord & Taylor and such. When we finally made our way to The Top of the Rock we were told that we needed to purchase tickets to go up...AND it was a 2 hour wait! I had gotten that far so I decided to stay, but I didn't want my mom to be out too late so I released her from her duty to keep me company. Lol. So I just hung out, snapping pictures, watching people and window shopping at Anthropologie until it was time for me to go up.  I was tired and my feet were beginning to hurt, but whatever! I had to get my last shot.

And the last shot did I get!

It took me moving miles away for me to really appreciate the complexities and dynamics my town. I experienced such a drastic range of emotions in this one day; from anticipation, to heaviness, to contentment, to happiness, to joy, to sheer delirium from exhaustion. New York is one of those places where you can experience all of those feelings. If you've never been, I encourage you to go! And if you live there, I encourage you to put the "NY way" to the side and be a tourist for a day. You never know what you'll experience!

Following That Little Voice | Random Musings

I think that I've told you all before, but I'm a business student at East Carolina University. (Go Pirates!!!) I'm a distance education student, which means that all of my courses are online. This is really great for me because instead of spending time commuting, I can use that time to focus on learning more about the art of photography, practicing and building up Chronicles Photography as much as I can before I graduate.

Since I'm entering my senior year, I decided that I wanted to apply for some business related internships. Two opportunities presented themselves and I applied for both. One was more corporate oriented and one was geared more toward photography. While the corporate position was a paid one, there were issues with the environment that didn't sit well with me. The photography internship was unpaid but promised a lot of practical photography and business experience and entrance to a photography conference that I had been wanting to attend. I chose the photography internship at Kelly Martin Photography and have been so blessed by the process!

Kelly is one of the most giving, humble people that I know. She has an intense passion to share her knowledge, even though we are in an arena that is super competitive. She doesn't care! She just wants others to learn as much as they can, which is why she founded the CLIC Conference. CLIC is a conference for any level of photographer who is interested in breaking into the wedding industry. The speakers that she has lined up also have a passion to share and teach and are UH-mazing. I can't wait to be a part of it next month.

Then there's this girl, who I always seem to catch behind the camera! That's Shantelle, who is also interning with me. It has been a pleasure getting to know her, quoting silly movie lines and lyrics with her and such. Shantelle also makes a really yummy chili.  Our team is amazing and I love them both.

Needless to say, I'm so glad that I did not go with the corporate internship. Knowing what I know now, that internship wouldn't have meshed well with the courses I took this summer. I probably would have failed one of those classes had I taken the internship. I'm glad that I listened to God and went with my passion. In the process I've learned so much, met some wonderful people and have had my heart filled beyond measure. This...is living!

Pause, Flash: Meet-Ups and Collabos | North Carolina Portrait Photographer

    Thursday, June 26, 2014

For the past 5 weeks, my life has been a little insane. You may or may not know this, but I am officially in my senior year at East Carolina University. (Go Pirates!) I'll be graduating with a BSBA in Management Information Systems. In my race desire to finish by May, I decided to take 2 heavy-duty quantitative courses this summer; Financial Management and Business Decision Modeling. That's 12 weeks of material for 2 courses, crammed into 5 weeks. Needless to say that by the end of it all, my brains were running out of my eye-sockets. The 1st summer semester ended yesterday. Woot woot!!! So, I celebrated a successful semester by linking up with a group of local photographers in Downtown, Raleigh for a head shot share.

This meet-up has been in the makings for a couple of weeks now. All of us are a part of a huge community of photographers in the Raleigh area. When the idea came up in the group to get together to be art as well as artist, several of us decided to make it happen. It was hot as all get out, and there was a threat of some hardcore rain, but we made it work. We are the 7! Meet the 6 (Ya'll know me already)

It was great to meet some wonderfully creative people, clear my mind of math and just shoot! There were definitely some awkward moments being on the other side of the lens, but these were always followed by laughter and more laughter. It's moments like those that help us relate to how you may be feeling when you're on the other side of the lens. We get it. We get you!

What a refreshing way to get the creative juices flowing for the projects coming down the pipe. I certainly needed it. Looking forward to more of these collabos in the future!

City of Lights | Personal Musings

NYC! The city that never sleeps and the place that I'm proud to call home. I grew up in a small neighborhood in the Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn. Outside of living in Raleigh for the past few years, I've never lived anywhere else. I hadn't been home in a while SOOOO, after some thought I decided to go home for a few weeks. It would give me a chance to spend some time with my mom and grandma, meet the children from South Africa that my mom is hosting this summer AND see my best friend who recently moved to Seattle to be with her hubby. Not to mention that my sister-in-law could visit there with me and experience NYC like a New Yorker.

Needless to say that my 11 day "vacation" was jam packed. We walked to our destinations the majority of the time (in 90+ degree temps) in true New York fashion, took the train to various places in The City and did theeee most every single day. But through it all I made sure to take some time for my photographic expression.

I finally made it down to Lower Manhattan to see the Freedom Tower. You can see this building from virtually any point in NY, Brooklyn and Queens. It's crazy. It's even more impressive to see it up close.

I also had the opportunity to  do an urban shoot with my Sis!

But the highlights of the trip were spending time with my sister-in-law and mom as well as my South African brothers Clive, Happy and Maxwell! At the end of the day Family is where you can find the greatest joys of life. I love them all!
