Graduations & Glow: Alexis Jones Lee | Durham Portrait Photographer

    Thursday, May 29, 2014

I absolutely love my clients! When I met Alexis, I was greeted by her warm smile, infectious laugh and rambunctious personality. But what immediately struck me was her height! This woman has gams and limbs for days! I asked her how tall she was and she casually replied, "About 5'11, but around 6'2 in these heels.", as she points to the platform stilettos on her feet. Rockstar!!! I knew that our session would be fun.

Alexis is a recent graduate of North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina. She completed her studies at the College of Arts & Sciences with a B.A. in Visual Communications, and did it while maintaining her household and running a successful business. Gotta love those stories.

One thing that I must mention about Alexis...she has the most beautiful glow to her! You meet her and immediately feel at ease. You know that feeling you get when you've met someone for the first time, but feel like you've known them forever? Yep! That was us on this day. We wound up chatting in Central's parking lot well after her session was done.

My Favorite 2014 Summer Color Combos and Looks | Raleigh Engagement Photographer

    Friday, May 23, 2014

I don't know about you all, but I am excited about the arrival of summer! It seemed like the winter months just dragged and dragged...*insert sad violin music here* So now that the blah, blah, blahs of winter are gone, we can begin to welcome the barbecues, beach trips and photo shoots of summer! Yay! *insert Summertime here*

I love the subtlety that a soft, romantic color palate can bring. But I also love how bold a striking, vibrant color palate translates in images. Being a visual person, I have put together a look-book of some of my favorite color combinations. Hopefully they will inspire you and guide you in choosing the perfect summer outfits for your photo session.

How to Make the Most Out of Your Family Photo Time | North Carolina Family Photographer

    Wednesday, May 21, 2014

Hey everyone! Happy Hump Day! Today I am going to be talking to you about making the most out of your family portrait time. My full portrait sessions come with 2 hours of shooting time. I offer this amount of time because I don't want the session to be rushed. Rushed sessions = the chance of not getting the best images, SOOO...two hours it is! The two hour time frame is usually fine for my clients that won't have any children joining them. But what about those who DO have children? And, most importantly, what if you have a child that really doesn't like to sit still for pictures? Dum, du, DUUUUUUM!!!

Chronicles Photography | Dawn Michelle Downey | Raleigh, NC Family Photographer

I hear these concerns pretty often and here are my thoughts on it. When I photograph families, especially children, I prefer for them to be themselves. That's right! Be yourself, little one. First thing's first, your little one may not be comfortable around me because they don't know me. Stranger, danger...right? So what I tend to do is encourage some play-time interaction, whether that be between siblings, mom and dad, or even me. This interaction can take a bit of time if they are particularly not in the mood for photos, but with some silly noises, a toy and some time, we can usually work it out.

Second, I do not urge little people to be still and smile. These are oxymoron's for children and it goes against their very nature. Most young children abhor sitting still, so usually that request ends pretty badly; forced smiles, or the ultimate...a breakdown. No bueno! It's pretty hard to recover from a breakdown and get great images. So if they want to run, I let them run for a bit. And we make a game out of it, usually with everyone ending up in the same spot, looking at the camera, smiling genuine smiles.

For example, the sweet little guy featured in these pictures was NOT feeling me when he and his family arrived to our shoot at Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn, NY.  And it was apparent from his cautious glances, first at me and then my camera, that was he in no mood for pictures. There was even a threat of tears! Not one to take no for an answer, I started doing the simplest thing...I played peek-a-boo with him. Then his mom and sister joined in on the fun and after a while he was lights, camera, action ready. We turned the session into playtime, which is a dream for any child. And after releasing a bit of energy, he couldn't get enough of the camera. We were able to get shots that would last a lifetime. He even showed me his cars!

Family sessions don't have to be buttoned up and stuffy, nor do you have to feel obligated to use the entire two hours for taking pictures. Not only do children (and some adults) need some time to warm up to the camera, but they also may need a moment to breath and come back with refreshed giggles and grins. Your images are an investment in capturing time. So allow everyone to relax a bit, be themselves and your pictures will be awesome!

Duke Gardens Buds & Blossoms 2014 Photo Contest | Raleigh Wedding Photographer

    Thursday, May 15, 2014

You know those moments where you participate in something simply for the fun of it, not really expecting anything in return? Well I had one of those when I submitted an image of a tulip standing apart from her peers to the Sarah P. Duke Gardens Buds & Blossoms Spring 2014 contest. I happened to be at the gardens scouting locations for an upcoming bridal shoot with one of my fabulous brides. The tulip garden was in full bloom and a sight to behold. As a photographer who happened to have her camera, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to snatch a few images. Later on, as I perused the Duke Gardens Facebook page, I realized they had a contest going on, so I submitted this...

...and it was selected as one of the winners! I'm so happy to have been able to capture a small portion of the beauty that is Sarah P. Duke Gardens. If you've never visited, make it a thing to do this summer. You won't regret it!

Miller Mother/Daughter Team: NYC Family Photographer

    Friday, April 25, 2014

Can I just say that love photography? The ability to capture a moment, or a relationship, and freeze it for a lifetime is pretty special. So when an opportunity arises to capture moments between a mother and her daughter, I get pretty excited.

Sabrina and Simona were filled with SO much energy from the moment we met! Their awesome relationship was apparent just by seeing how playful and affectionate they were towards one another. Not only that, but they are absolutely GAWJUS!!!

I had a ball hanging out with these two, photographing and observing them. AND they were ready for a good time in the streets of NYC, which was the icing on the cake.

We had a bit of an intense moment here. Nothing like a well placed joke to lighten things up again!

There's nothing quite like a relationship between a mother and her daughter, is there?

    Last Night: Portrait Palooza 2014

    Wednesday, March 26, 2014

Challenge...if I'm not experiencing it then I'm not living. It is proven that challenges make a person stronger and better in their craft. I can't say that I love the apprehension that challenge brings, but knowing what I know about the strengthening power of challenge, I won't turn one down either.

When I saw the Portrait Palooza 2014 being advertised by a group that I belong to on Facebook, I battled with myself a bit...Should I do it, or shouldn't I? I began to tell myself that there would be other, more experienced photographers there, that I didn't have enough to make a mere 10 minutes with a model work. I needed more...more equipment, more experience, more time, yadda, yadda, yadda. And then I did the unthinkable...I registered for the event...just like that. You see, it has been my experience that when faced with an opportunity to do something new and I begin to talk myself out of it, I need to just trust God and go ahead and do whatever that thing is. I'm never disappointed when I do.

Last night was the event. I was nervous and calm all at once. The event was held at Babylon Restaurant in Downtown Raleigh and the holding area was abuzz with energy. There were models getting their hair and make-up done, organizers flitting to and fro, and photographers arriving with their teams and their equipment. It was exciting! My mentor, Marc D. Hunter, even made an appearance to assist me with whatever I needed. Once the competition began, we all sat in the holding area and chatted, watching photographers go out and come back in. They seemed to be gone only for a moment; that's how quickly time flew by. Finally my name was called. Marc and I gathered our things, were introduced to the proctor and then our model, Laura...Then the timer began...

    10 minutes.
    One girl.
So many areas of interest to shoot...

I identified 3 areas to shoot in and got to work. Marc and I were able to work with a Westcott Ice Light, which was available for us photographers by the organizers of the event. That thing is AWESOME! It looks like a light saber and mimics natural light. The light from this wand is simply spectacular and it's super portable also. Marc was such a good sport. He aimed the Ice Light for me and was an awesome light stand on two feet. I had everything that I needed in that moment so I shot away. I was focused. I had to get what I needed. Before we knew it the 10 minutes were up and I returned to the holding area feeling rejuvenated.

Today I am still feeling the effects of event. I selected my favorite 2 images and have already submitted them for judging. Now the waiting period begins. I would love to be named as a "technical" winner, but at the end of the day I've already won because I stepped outside of my comfort zone. Go me! I look forward to participating in the next Portrait Palooza and would recommend it to any photographer that wants to grow. I can't share the 2 images that I submitted until judging has commenced, but the ones in this post are some of my other favorites.
