Before/After: The Purpose of Editing | Raleigh Engagement Photographer

    Dawn Michelle Downey Chronicles Photography

Editing...what is it and why is it done? Editing, in context of photography, is the process of scrutinizing an image from top to bottom, removing any imperfections and enhancing areas until the image is perfect. Most photos go through some kind of editing. It is completely up to the photographer wether the edits are as simple as sharpening the image and bumping up the contrast, or major, like cloning out areas. I have the perfect example.

I photographed this couple in a very picturesque location here in Raleigh, NC; however, there was an ugly orange divider in the middle of the lake. This orange thing showed up in all of the pictures that we took in this location. Uuuuugggghhhh! Of course my couple was concerned about it showing in their photos, but I told them not to worry; post processing would take care of it. I cloned that sucker right on out. In addition, I bumped up the saturation, making the colors more vibrant, and cloned in some tree cover to mask the bright spot in the upper right corner. I also made some other adjustments to make it pop more.

Sure I could have delivered the original photo to my client, as is. After all, it's not a bad picture, right? But why should I not take things a step further and deliver as perfect of a picture as possible (say this 3 times, hahaha) to them. So, when you hear me, or any other photographer, talk about post processing, know that we are editing your photos to make the best possible images for your collection of memories.

Engagements: JaVonni + Christopher | Raleigh Engagement Photographer

    Friday, October 25, 2013

Meet JaVonni and Christopher. When they individually made plans to travel to the wedding of a mutual friend, neither anticipated meeting their future life companion. They were introduced at the wedding and hung out with a group of friends over the course of the weekend. Even then, JaVonni and Christopher were oblivious. A simple walk on the beach changed that. They established an unbreakable bond on that walk...one that both of them knew was different from any other that they had felt in the past. That weekend turned into a celebration of love, all around.

One thing that I love about them is that they are both incredibly passionate, especially about football. An immediate household rivalry has been born out of this relationship; Giants vs. Cowboys. Football season should be very interesting at their place. Congratulations to my loving, funny and super competitive couple! Wishing you two a lifetime of blessings.

It's nice to be able to stop for a minute and take in the smallest details. Sometimes I have to force myself to do this, and today was no different. Earlier today, I was walking the dog, trying to hurry up so that I could get back in the house...as usual. But then I realized that after 2 weeks, the sun was finally out. It felt soooo good to me! So I began to do a lazy stroll with Nat, taking in the sights of my neighborhood. Then I came across all of these beautiful bushes with little, blooming flowers. The bees were all OVER them though. (I run like a chicken when a bee is near) But what I was seeing was such an awesome picture! So I went inside, grabbed my camera, and made my foe my model. All I can say is, she's not so bad...today. Glad I paused for a second to enjoy the light of the sun on my back.

Engagements: Leslie + Stephen | Raleigh Engagement Photographer

    Monday, October 7, 2013

Before I photograph anyone, I tend to pray to God that he allow me to see my subject how he sees them. I especially love doing this before weddings and engagement sessions, and this time was no different. Leslie and Stephen's engagement shoot couldn't be any more perfect than it already was! The weather was perfect, our location was set up perfectly and my couple received a pleasant confirmation; Their wedding date engraved in the form of the address of our shoot location. Totally NOT planned by me! Congratulations to my dynamic, super affectionate, funny couple: Leslie and Stephen.

Styled Shoots: Mother-Daughter Sunset Tea | Durham Family Photographer

    Friday, September 27, 2013

There's just something special about the adult relationship that a mother has with her daughter. No matter how many times we disagree, we always come back full circle, full of love and respect for one another.

I was thinking of doing a shoot for my mother-in-law and sister-in-law. They already have a pretty close relationship, but hey, you can never be too close, right? In my mind I saw this shoot as being relaxing and a way for them to get together and just hang out. Little by little the ideas flowed in. I started thinking of tea, warmth and coziness, which became the words that I styled this shoot around.

Mother and daughter had a fab time simply chatting and bonding over tea and red velvet cupcakes as the sun set over the waving treetops. It was a beautiful evening. I'll let the chronicle tell the rest of the story.

They're not here forever. Let's honor them.
